Phototrophic Microorganisms: A Potent Biodegrading Community Whose Contribution to Pesticide Fate is Currently Overlooked
نویسندگان
چکیده
Throughout the history of pesticide regulation, laboratory studies on microbial metabolism have been conducted in continuous darkness. This was based on a presumption that the communities responsible for pesticide degradation are predominantly bacteria and fungi. However, conducting studies in this way excludes the potential contribution of phototrophic microorganisms (algae) which will be present to some extent in all terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Despite a number of publications showing that algae can metabolise xenobiotic compounds in pure culture, there is little data on their potential to metabolise pesticides in more realistic test systems. Over recent years Syngenta have developed higher tier studies (both in soil and aquatic test systems), often simply based on introducing a suitable light-dark cycle into OECD regulatory studies, which capture the contribution of algae to the overall degradation of pesticides.

متن کاملTracking microbial populations effective in reducing exposure.
Microbial ecology provides the link between basic biochemical and molecular studies on toxicity reduction by microbial metabolism and environmental studies that determine exposure. This link provides the ability to determine which microorganisms are responsible for the actual transformations in nature, thereby establishing how predictive the laboratory pathway, kinetic, regulatory, and enzyme m...
متن کاملHave we overlooked the importance of small phytoplankton in productive waters?
The idea that phytoplankton size structure increases with elevated nutrient content in lakes may be inaccurate because phototrophic picoplankton (Ppico) abundance was not accounted for in studies that originally described this phenomenon. The biomass, composition, and production of an entire phytoplankton community was evaluated in hypereutrophic Lake Apopka, Florida (avg chlorophyll = 105 pg l...
متن کاملElectroactivity of phototrophic river biofilms and constitutive cultivable bacteria.
Electroactivity is a property of microorganisms assembled in biofilms that has been highlighted in a variety of environments. This characteristic was assessed for phototrophic river biofilms at the community scale and at the bacterial population scale. At the community scale, electroactivity was evaluated on stainless steel and copper alloy coupons used both as biofilm colonization supports and...
متن کاملDiversity in isoprene unit biosynthesis: The methylerythritol phosphate pathway in bacteria and plastids
The long-overlooked methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway represents an alternative to the mevalonate route for the formation of isoprene units. It is found in most bacteria as well as in the plastids of all phototrophic organisms. A selection of significant steps of its discovery and elucidation are presented in this contribution, as well as a complete hypothetical biogenetic scheme for the...
